Article 1. How To Determine if Treatment Really Helped- Stephen M. Edelson, Ph.D.
There are many types of interventions available today for autistic individuals, including nutritional, biomedical, educational, sensory, and behavioral. When beginning a new intervention, it is important to be as objective as possible to determine whether the treatment truly helped the person. If the treatment is not helping, then it does not make sense to continue it especially if it involves a great deal of time, money, or effort.

Article 2. Desperate for Respite- Maureen Bennie
As parents of special needs children, we have respite funding to get a much-needed break from the stresses of our parenting situation. Talking to parents, I found out that many were not using their respite hours or not using all of their allotted respite hours. Why? Most parents find it difficult to find good, reliable childcare. It is not easy to find someone to look after children with autism or PDD. I found a great solution to this problem by using the organization Post Natal Helpers, which is an agency in Calgary, AB that sends competent mature ladies with parenting experience. My best friend gave me eight hours of Post Natal Helpers as a gift when my daughter was born. I have been using them two years this June.
Larger cities in Canada would have these types of agencies. Good places to find this kind of support would be your local hospital, public health clinic, the yellow pages under "Baby Sitters", your pediatrician's office, or through government social services agencies.

1. Poem- The Gift
Hollow eyes that see through all
Quiet lips that cast a pall.
Slowing moving, rocking still
Rhythmic wonder gives a chill.

Haunting silence through the day
Hands with magic, never play.
Dancing, lilting through the night
Dream with angel's quiet might.

Mystery babe, the heart runs deep
Child of God does never sleep.
Song of silence - perfect one
Soul of earth and rain and sun.

Answer not to be in store
For many, many ages more.
Mist and whispers all abide
Around you now, but all inside.

Hollow eyes - when will they turn
To look in love, to live, to learn?
Dignity, love - they must exist
To free the angels from the mist.

2. Letter From Jonny- Jonny Sicoli

May 17, 2001

Dear Pat,

I am sorry for the seat, but I got angry because of Nicholas Crock, because he's annoying me sometimes(99.9% of the time he is) and he's on the first bus I get on to go to school. He throws leftover chocolate Jello pudding (in a container with holes on the lid) at me when he's getting of, and it gets my clothes dirty (mom doesn't want me to wear dirty clothing). While he's on, he and his friend gang up on me (and, occasionally, tell other big kids to do it) and they occasionally move from seat to seat to get at me! They move ahead, one pair of seats at a time, bonk me on the head, and rush back to their seat. Fortunately, his buddy had to move to the front seat. And sometimes, still in their seats, they throw assorted junk at me (jello pudding, paper balls, etc.) sometimes they miss. He sometimes says I live in a garbage dump, a cardboard box, and on certain times he calls me "gaylord," gay not meaning happy. Matt told me to say "gee, thanks, I'll remember that!" when Nicholas says I am a gaylord. He sometimes swears. The one kid I saw and liked in his family was Nicholas's kid brother! Since I can only sit in the 4th seat or further up, I'm a supreme target. Fortunately, they have never stolen my lunch yet. The reason I made those holes was because I needed to do something to release my tension. Mrs. Lorenz and I talked about what I could do instead of damaging other people's stuff.

Sincerely
Jonny Sicoli

Reviews- What Does It Mean To Me?

In the Fall 2000 issue of the REACH Newsletter, Catherine Faherty's book entitled, "What Does It Mean To Me?" was highlighted. Since that time, it has been used nationally and internationally to introduce children with AS or HFA to their diagnosis and has also been nominated for the Autism Society of America's Book of the Year Award. Carolyn Ogburn, TEACCH Job Coach, interviews Dave Spicer, a local adult with Asperger's Syndrome about its usefulness. by Carolyn Ogburn, Job Coach
