Article 1. Assessment, Excerpt from Aspergers..What
Does it Mean to Me?- By Catherine Faherty
An overall assessment of your child's skills and pattern
of learning is necessary. Formal and informal assessment
will reveal his unique pattern of strengths and weaknesses,
talents, and interests. No single numerical score (and
no single test) can accurately describe your child's
development. Children with autism have "peaks and
valleys" in their development.

Article 2. Mother Finds Mission As Autism Advocate.
.To Carry The Olympic Torch- By Glenn Miller
Heather Harris received the news about her son's autism
when James
Patrick was 2 1/2. "They said he'd probably be
mentally retarded and there was not a good chance of
him speaking and not to expect a lot," Harris said.
"I completely refused to acknowledge that as true.
I went around the area and found a lot of people in
the area who had done a lot with autism
already. And so I found people who had been there and
pooled all the information."

Article 3. Coping with the Reality of Severe Autism,
Part 3- By Nathan Ory
General concepts for supporting emotionally fragile
individuals who display maladaptive patterns of adjustment.
How are care providers to support a person who is not
connected to others, who lives in-the-immediate moment,
who reflects and magnifies other's emotions, and who
has little continuity of experience?

1. Poem- Could You Sing A Song For Them? - By Doris
Washington
They exist, and you pretend they are not-"here."
They too have families who love them- and hold them
- "dear."
"Could You Sing A Song For Them?"
It may seem as though they may not hear, and they may
walk away.
If you could take the time to know about them, you may
see they have something
to say.
"Could You Sing A Song For Them?"
They may become overanxious at times for no apparent
reason.
They have a difficult time understanding change in routine.
"Could You Sing A Song For Them?"
And they may not be able to communicate like you and
me.
They may not tend to one task too long. For this is
their- Disability.
"Could You Sing A Song For Them?"
Their Disability is- Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Autism
Spectrum Disorder.-
And there are other terms- too.
Could you give them a- "chance?" For they
live -"here"- just like me and you.
Could You Sing A Song For Them?
