Article 1. Social Problems: Understanding Emotions and Developing Talents- By Temple Grandin

I did not know that eye movements had meaning until I read Mind Blindness by Simon Baron-Cohen. I had no idea that people communicated feelings with their eyes. I also did not know that people get all kinds of little emotional signals which transmit feelings. My understanding of this became clearer after I read Descartes' Error by Antonio Damasio. From the book I learned that, in most people, information in memory is seamlessly linked with emotion. I have emotions which can be very strong when I am experiencing them, but information stored in memory can be scanned at will without emotion. It is like surfing the Internet of web pages in my mind.

Article 2. Transitioning: Making the Move Towards Inclusion- By Maureen Bennie

There may come a time in a young autistic person's life when it is necessary to leave a specialized program because of age, developmental progress, or readiness. Transitioning to a mainstream educational program can have many benefits for a child with autism. There are models of behavior and skills for children to observe and follow. Socialization with typically developing age peers is also a plus. To make a successful transition towards inclusion in a community setting, parents need to prepare the child in terms of skills, prepare the child emotionally, choose a suitable program, prepare the program, and work with the program staff.

Article 3. The Inner Savant- By Douglas S. Fox

Are you capable of multiplying 147,631,789 by 23,674 in your head, instantly?
Nadia appeared healthy at birth, but by the time she was 2, her parents knew something was amiss. She avoided eye contact and didn't respond when her mother smiled or cooed. She didn't even seem to recognize her mother. At 6 months she still had not spoken a word. She was unusually clumsy and spent hours in repetitive play, such as tearing paper into
strips.

1. Poem- You Don't Have To Cry

You don't have to cry
Yet your tears fall down
Like a waterfall after the rain
You don't have to cry
We'll love you forever and take care of your needs
AUTISM - A GARDEN OF WEEDS
You don't have to cry
It causes me pain
I try so hard
AUTISM - AN ENDLESS DRAIN
You don't have to cry
Mommy's not leaving - just turning a corner
You don't have to cry
Daddy and I understand you - without a word
A silent look can tell
One Hug - One Touch
AUTISM - WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH
You don't have to cry
I'll cry for us all
The children, parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents
too the
ones who will never hear your voice
I'll cry for you, so you can smile
I'll fight for you, so you can grow
In a world you'll find hard to know
You don't have to cry
I love you
For eternity
Mommy

2. Contest- Heart Warming Autism Stories
When my book, Little Rainman, was first published, you wouldn't believe the number of parents that told me their funny, cute, hilarious and sentimental stories about their own kids with autism! What a gift that was to me. I wanted so much to share them at the time and simply never had the chance. Soooo many stories, so little time.
If you are a parent, I'm sure you can remember when you first found out about your child's diagnosis! I can remember exactly where I was when I heard the news as clear as a bell. Ding Dong, right in the parking lot in front of Safeway! In fact even to this day, when I go there to shop I flash on that memory.
