Children should
be seen and not heard.
Such noisy creatures. Babbling nonsense learned
from their teachers.
Except for one boy, he never says a word.
The games kids play are absurd.
Always needing a friend. Imagining a life that
will never end.
In a corner, all alone, he never says a word.
With the innocence of a bird.
They dance and sing. Wondering what newness the
next day will bring.
He spins the wheels on his toy car, and never
says a word.
All alone in the midst of a crowd.
How strange he seems. In a world so completely
his own, he dreams.
Oh what I would give just once to have heard,
not just seen this autistic child.
