As more and more people are diagnosed with this disability, so should police officers be aware of this and learn how to handle it.

Law enforcement personnel as well as all emergency personnel need to be trained in understanding of autism and any type of disorder.

Police should have the training because they may encounter an autistic person. Without training the police may mistakenly arrest, shoot, or misunderstand the person they've encountered.

I have a friend with an autistic child, he left the house one day on his own (he was 5), He was seen by a cop and brought back, the cop came to the house and chewed the mother out and threatened to call social services. He would not let her get a word in to explain his condition. Very frustrating!

When I asked the Director of our county jail what happens when you have a person with autism in custody. The response was "We have an R.N. who treats them." Yea right ,and then what?
