Some comments:
awareness is the best way to deal with misconceptions. 06/17/02 8:57:57 PM MST As more and more people are diagnosed with this disability, so should police officers be aware of this and learn how to handle it. 06/15/02 6:23:39 AM MST Law enforcement personnel as well as all emergency personnel need to be trained in understanding of autism and any type of disorder. 06/13/02 7:23:23 AM MST
Police should have the training because they may encounter an autistic person. Without training the police may mistakenly arrest, shoot, or misunderstand the person they've encountered. 06/12/02 6:01:02 PM MST absolutly!!! 06/12/02 4:13:19 PM MST I have a friend with an autistic child, he left the house one day on his own (he was 5), He was seen by a cop and brought back, the cop came to the house and chewed the mother out and threatened to call social services. He would not let her get a word in to explain his condition. Very frustrating! 06/12/02 12:34:41 PM MST my son who has autism Father is a police officer and still has trouble understanding the disorder 06/11/02 8:55:07 AM MST When I asked the Director of our county jail what happens when you have a person with autism in custody. The response was "We have an R.N. who treats them." Yea right ,and then what? 06/11/02 7:19:33 AM MST of course...it is common sense isn't it? or don't they have common sense? 06/11/02 2:34:37 AM MST
